Computer-Assisted Semen Analysis (CASA)

Pooyesh Fertility Clinic

What is CASA?

In some modern andrology laboratories, semen analysis (spermogram) is performed not only by manual microscopic examination but also with the aid of advanced computer software (CASA). This technology allows for faster and more accurate evaluation of sperm parameters, including motility, concentration, and morphology.

One of the key advantages of CASA is that, along with the laboratory report, patients also receive high-quality images of their sperm attached to the spermogram. This visual documentation helps both physicians and patients better understand sperm quality. In addition, sperm motility results are less prone to human error since the counts are performed by automated systems.

Parameters Evaluated in CASA Semen Analysis

CASA provides a detailed assessment of the following parameters:

  • Sperm Count: The number of sperm per milliliter of semen
  • Semen Volume: The total amount of semen produced per ejaculation
  • Sperm Concentration: The ratio of sperm number to semen volume
  • Sperm Motility: The percentage of sperm that show forward movement
  • Progressive Motility: The percentage of sperm with rapid forward movement
  • Sperm Morphology: The percentage of sperm with normal shape
  • Head Morphology: The percentage of sperm with normal head structure
  • Neck Morphology: The percentage of sperm with a normal neck
  • Tail Morphology: The percentage of sperm with a normal tail
  • Sperm Activity: The percentage of sperm that are active and viable

When is CASA Recommended?

CASA semen analysis may be requested in the following situations:

  • Fertility Assessment: To help identify causes of male infertility
  • Monitoring Treatment Outcomes: To evaluate the effectiveness of infertility treatments in men
  • General Men’s Health Check: To assess male reproductive health and detect possible risks for conditions such as testicular cancer
