Sperm Vitality Tests (N&E)
Pooyesh Fertility Clinic
What are sperm vitality tests?
Sperm vitality tests are part of the advanced evaluation of sperm function and are especially important when sperm motility is very low. The purpose of these tests is to determine the percentage of live sperm in a semen sample, particularly when the sperm are immotile or show very limited movement.
Contrary to common belief, not all immotile sperm are dead. Some sperm may be alive but unable to move, and still retain the potential to fertilize an egg. Vitality testing helps distinguish between live immotile sperm and dead sperm.
When is a sperm vitality test recommended?
- When sperm motility is extremely low or absent
- To differentiate between immotile live sperm and dead sperm
- To guide decision-making in assisted reproductive techniques such as ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection)
How are N&E tests performed?
- 1 Sample collection: A semen sample is obtained.
- 2 Laboratory assessment: The sample is examined using specific laboratory techniques, such as staining and microscopic evaluation.
- 3 Results: The findings are reported to both the physician and the patient.
Interpretation of N&E test results
- N test: Indicates the proportion of live sperm in the semen sample
- E test: Assesses sperm motility
